Most sore throats are caused by viruses or simple bacterial infections like Strep, which can be treated at urgent care. However, deep infections and abscesses can quickly become life-threatening emergencies. At TotalCare ER, our regional Texas facilities are equipped with the advanced imaging and rapid interventions needed to treat severe throat infections and secure your airway.
When to Go to the ER for a Sore Throat
If you have a simple scratchy throat, urgent care is appropriate. Head to your nearest TotalCare ER facility immediately if you experience:
- Airway Obstruction: You have difficulty breathing, are gasping for air, or are making a high-pitched sound (stridor) when breathing in.
- Inability to Swallow: You cannot swallow your own saliva, are drooling uncontrollably, or refuse to drink fluids due to severe pain.
- "Hot Potato" Voice: Your voice sounds muffled, as if you have a hot potato in your mouth (a sign of a peritonsillar abscess).
- Neck Swelling: You notice swelling on the outside of your neck or stiffness that prevents you from moving your head.
- High Fever with Rigors: A fever over 103°F accompanied by severe shaking or chills.
Our Capabilities
- CT Soft Tissue Neck: Rapid imaging to identify deep space infections or abscesses.
- IV Therapy: Immediate administration of fluids, steroids to reduce swelling, and broad-spectrum antibiotics.
- Abscess Drainage: Emergency incision and drainage for peritonsillar abscesses.
Note: If the person is struggling to breathe or turning blue, call 911 immediately.
